plainDB: a DBeaver alternative for focused database work

Official product sources and plainDB implementation checked September 18, 2026. This comparison is published by plainDB, an independent product with no affiliation to the other vendor.

plainDB is a DBeaver alternative for developers who want a focused workspace for tables, filters, reviewed grid edits and SQL. DBeaver Community offers free, open-source access to a much broader database ecosystem. The practical choice is which workflow and platform fit your work.

Why evaluate plainDB?

If PostgreSQL, Supabase, MySQL and SQLite cover your day, you can evaluate plainDB around a short sequence: connect, find a record, inspect its values, review an edit and run a query. The query workspace includes per-statement results, saved queries, history and a persistent Query Pad. Environment labels help keep connection context visible.

Manual transaction controls and saved row undo for supported PostgreSQL and SQLite tables are implemented on both platforms. Mac users also get charts, visual EXPLAIN, ER diagrams and a table designer. The optional assistant uses Apple's on-device model on eligible Macs. Consult platform support for the complete boundaries.

Staged grid edits show the generated SQL before applying. This is a specific review workflow, not a claim that every write is intercepted: SQL typed into the editor uses its execution controls. Use database permissions for access restrictions.

When DBeaver is the stronger fit

DBeaver Community is a straightforward choice when open-source licensing, Linux support or engines outside plainDB's current set are requirements. For commercial DBeaver features, check the exact edition rather than treating Community and PRO as one product. The official download page identifies PRO capabilities such as additional authentication integrations and task scheduling.

No controlled performance comparison has been conducted here. Test both tools with the same database and result size if speed is the reason for changing clients. Our practical GUI checklist helps compare a real work session.
