How to choose a PostgreSQL GUI for Mac or Windows
Try a PostgreSQL GUI with the work you actually do: open a connection, find a table, filter a few rows and export the result. Then switch to another database and back. That tells you more about the fit than a feature list.
Start with the connection you actually use
Start with your operating system, PostgreSQL version and connection setup. A local development server, a managed cloud database and a database behind an SSH bastion create different requirements. Bring a non-production database to the evaluation and use a restricted role where possible.
For remote databases, look for certificate configuration rather than an SSL checkbox alone. PostgreSQL distinguishes transport encryption from validating the server's identity. The strongest listed mode, verify-full, checks both a trusted certificate and the server hostname. PostgreSQL SSL modes.
Test the work you need to do
| Your work | What to test | Why it changes the choice |
|---|---|---|
| Inspect application data | Schema navigation, readable values, filters and paging. | You repeat these actions throughout the day. |
| Correct individual records | Primary-key identification, staged changes, SQL review and error handling. | A convenient editor still needs a precise target. |
| Write SQL | Current statement, selection and script execution; result tabs and cancellation. | The unit of execution should be obvious. |
| Share results | Export formats, NULL handling and whether exports include one page or every matching row. | A file can look complete while containing only a subset. |
| Administer PostgreSQL | The specific roles, maintenance and server-management operations you need. | A data browser is not automatically an administration suite. |
Use the same ten-minute trial for each client
- Save a clearly named test connection. Disconnect and reconnect to confirm the saved settings.
- Open a table with a primary key. Find a particular row with a filter, then change the sort order.
- Inspect one long text value and one NULL. Confirm that the UI distinguishes NULL from an empty string.
- Run a small SELECT, then two SELECT statements together. Check which result is visible and which statement the Run command executes.
- On disposable test data, stage one edit. Inspect the generated SQL, then discard it. Repeat and apply only if you intend to change the test record.
- Export a known number of rows and compare the file's row count with the intended result.
This procedure is an evaluation checklist, not a benchmark. Record where each client saves clicks or introduces ambiguity for your own schema. Measure performance with the same database, query and network before claiming one client is faster.
Check Mac and Windows separately
A product can offer both platforms while shipping different features on each. PlainDB's current implementations share PostgreSQL browsing, reviewed table editing, query history, saved queries and Query Pad. Both platforms include CSV import and visual EXPLAIN; AI uses a local model with platform-specific setup. Both table exporters can fetch all matching rows. The feature matrix lists those boundaries.
When a different client fits better
pgAdmin is a PostgreSQL-focused development and administration platform available for desktop and web deployment. DBeaver Community is a free, open-source choice with broad database support. TablePlus offers a mature multi-database workspace. plainDB is worth evaluating when its supported engines and browse–filter–review workflow match your needs; Mac 2.1.10 and Windows 2.1.11 are available.
